Mebane is the fastest-growing town in Alamance County: the 2020 census counted 17,797 people and the Census Bureau estimated 20,654 by 2024. Some of that growth is on the Alamance side. A good deal of it — proportionally the fastest — is on the Orange County side, which grew by about forty per cent in those four years.
That county line runs through the town, and it matters more than anything else on a Mebane address.
In North Carolina, school districts are organised by county. The Alamance County portion of Mebane is served by the Alamance-Burlington School System. The Orange County portion is served by Orange County Schools. They are separate systems with separate schools, separate calendars and separate assignment rules.
And both halves share one ZIP code: 27302. So the ZIP tells you nothing at all about which district a house is in. Neither does the mailing address, because both are written Mebane, NC 27302. Two houses a few streets apart can be in different school systems, and buyers do not find this out from the listing.
The county also decides which county's taxes you pay, which county office handles your permits, and which sheriff's office answers.
What we do about it is simple: on every house we show you in Mebane, we confirm the county before anything else, and then the currently assigned schools for that specific address. Assignment zones change — districts redraw them, and Alamance-Burlington has been redrawing attendance zones — so we check the district's own zone finder rather than repeating what an old listing said.
If schools are a reason you are moving, say so in the first conversation. It is much easier to search the right half of a town than to fall in love with the wrong one.
