Mebane sits on the eastern edge of Alamance County and spills over into Orange. It was incorporated in 1881 as Mebanesville, renamed Mebane two years later, and became a city in 1987. The 2020 census counted 17,797 people; by 2024 the estimate was 20,654.
That growth is the story of the town. Between 2020 and 2024 the Alamance side grew about eleven per cent and the Orange County side about forty-two — off a smaller base, but it shows where the building is going. Subdivisions have replaced farmland on both sides of the county line, and more are approved.
The county line matters for a practical reason: schools. The Alamance County portion is served by the Alamance-Burlington School System; the Orange County portion is served by Orange County Schools. Two houses a few streets apart, both with a Mebane 27302 address, can be in different districts. Always check the address, never the ZIP.
Employment and shopping have followed the interstate. Tanger Outlets opened at Exit 154 in November 2010 and is still there with more than sixty stores; distribution and manufacturing plants have arrived along I-40/I-85, including Medline and a Morinaga plant now under construction. North Carolina's first Buc-ee's is also being built here, at Exit 152, expected to open in 2027 — it is not open yet, whatever you may have heard.

Which school district will my Mebane address be in?
Whichever county the address is in. Alamance County addresses are served by the Alamance-Burlington School System; Orange County addresses by Orange County Schools. The ZIP code is 27302 either way, so it tells you nothing. If schools matter to your decision, tell us early and we will confirm the county and the assigned schools for every house you look at.
Is Mebane worth it for a Triangle commute?
For a lot of people, yes — that is what is driving the growth. Chapel Hill and Durham are roughly half an hour on I-40/I-85, Raleigh about an hour, and the money buys more house than it does inside Orange or Durham counties.
Is the Buc-ee's open?
Not yet. North Carolina's first Buc-ee's is under construction at Exit 152 in Mebane, on the Alamance County side, and is expected to open in 2027. An earlier plan for a site in Efland, in Orange County, was withdrawn in 2021.
What should I look at in a new subdivision here?
The HOA documents and dues, what is still to be built around you, who maintains the roads and stormwater, and the builder's warranty. On a brand-new house it is also worth having your own inspection rather than relying only on the county one.
