Gibsonville was settled in the 1850s and incorporated in 1871, and it sits astride the Alamance–Guilford county line. Both halves are substantial: of the roughly 9,700 people the Census Bureau estimated for 2024, a little over five thousand were on the Guilford side, which is also the faster-growing half.
It is known as the City of Roses, a name in use since at least 1920, after the roses planted along the railroad by the Minneola Mill. Two mills anchor the town's history — Minneola, built in 1886, and Hiawatha, built in 1893 — and the renovated Minneola building now houses businesses. The town welcome centre is in a red caboose, and there is a self-guided historic walking tour downtown.
The housing is a mix: older homes near the small downtown, mill-era houses, and newer subdivisions, especially on the Guilford side. The county line matters here as it does in Mebane — Guilford County Schools serve the Guilford portion, the Alamance-Burlington School System serves the Alamance portion.
The real draw is the location. Greensboro is about seventeen miles, under half an hour, which is the shortest run of any town in this guide. Elon and Burlington are ten to fifteen minutes the other way. NC 61 connects the town to I-40/I-85 at Exit 138.
