Saxapahaw is the most unusual address in the county. The first mill here was built in 1844 by the Quaker settler John Newlin; Dixie Yarns ran the later brick mill until a tornado ended production in 1994. In 2005 the lower mill was restored into apartments and lofts, and the village has been steadily reinventing itself since.
Today the Rivermill holds lofts, apartments, townhomes and cottages, with geothermal heating, solar hot water, rainwater harvesting, a community garden and river access for canoes and kayaks. The Haw River Ballroom opened in the former dye house in 2011 and books real touring acts. The Saxapahaw General Store — a petrol station that is also a serious kitchen — opened in 2008 and is the reason a lot of people first come here.
Two practical things. First, the census counted 1,671 people in 2020 and there is no newer figure, because Saxapahaw is an unincorporated community rather than a town. Second, and more important for buyers: 27340 is a PO Box ZIP. Street addresses in Saxapahaw are written Graham, NC 27253, which is why listings here often look like Graham listings.
Schools are part of the Alamance-Burlington School System, and the village also has the Hawbridge School, a tuition-free public charter. Chapel Hill is the nearest city of any size — about twenty-eight minutes, closer than from anywhere else in this guide.

Because the Postal Service uses 27340 for PO Boxes only. Street addresses in the village are addressed Graham, NC 27253. It is the same place either way — but it means a search for "Saxapahaw" can miss houses that are plainly in Saxapahaw, which is one reason to have someone local looking for you.
Can you actually buy a house there, or is it all lofts?
Both. The Rivermill has lofts, apartments, townhomes and cottages, and there are houses and land in the country around the village. Inventory is thin, so it pays to be ready when something comes up.
What is it like to live there?
Small and rural, with more going on than the size suggests: the general store, the Ballroom, the summer music series, the river. Chapel Hill is under half an hour, which is why it attracts people who work there but do not want to pay Orange County prices.
